Acupuncture for IVF support at AcuMed Ascot – 2 sessions $120

Should I have acupuncture and IVF?

During an IVF cycle we recommend you commit to your IVF doctor’s recommendations and avoid any other intervention until after egg retreival. When Maria Berry was working in an IVF clinic she found acupuncture would alter the hormone levels which could derail the carfeully drug-controlled IVF protocol.

When should I have acupuncture to support IVF?

If you would like acupuncture IVF support, let us know when you start treatment to reserve our time. Next, you let us know when your egg collection is scheduled (you will know at least 2 days before surgery).

Your 1st session of IVF support acupuncture

is given AFTER egg collection – usually the next day. The aim of this treatment is to reduce the trauma of the surgery and restablish a healthy flow in the uterus/reproductive system to make you receptive for pregnancy.

Your 2nd session of IVF support acupuncture

is given after the embryo transfer (3-5 days after egg pick-up). This session must be given prompty after transfer - so we will be on standby to see you directly from the hospital (they keep you about 60mins and we are about 15 mins drive away).  This treatment is designed to encourage the implantation of the embryo into the lining.

During the experiments conducted to test the effect of acupuncture, when the 2nd treatment was conducted later than 4 hours after transfer the results were equal to the no treatment group.

Do you do the same acupuncture treatments for ICSI?

    Thanks

  • Maria Berry, December 11th, 2010 on 4:54 pm

    Dear Kate,

Yes the same protocol applies for IVF with ICSI.

You still need the first session (after the surgery to remove your eggs) to prepare your uterus for a pregnancy.

You also need the second session to encourage implantation.

If we were treating you to promote your fertility, which is done in the months before you start an IVF cycle, it would not be a standard procedure. Every one we treat has a unique set of issues which contribute to reduced fertility and requires individual assessment and treatment.

However, once you start an IVF cyle then we offer this 2-session support treatment which has now been shown in several different research trials to make your IVF more likely to result in a pregnancy.

    Good luck

Can I get acupuncture & take chinese herbs leading up to my IVF cycle?

  • Maria Berry, February 1st, 2011 on 12:26 pm

Everything we do with Chinese Medicine (acupuncture and herbs) will promote your health.

If you are thinking about IVF you must be having trouble making a baby. We will look at the tests you have already had done, review your menstrual history, your husbands sexual health and your general health. In there we will find factors which may be limiting your fertility and set up a plan to resolve them.

It may be that you need to come in for acupuncture at certain times or take herbs on certain days or that your husband needs a course of treatment.

Each month you will see changes in your reproductive health. Many of our clients conceive within 3 cycles. If not, when fertility signs are positive an IVF will usually be successful.

In answer to your original question YES you can use our medicine to prepare for IVF – but, it takes a few months to get the benefit NOT just a few days.

I’m trying to work out what I need to do before I plan for my pregnancy. Is there any tips on how to prepare for pregnancy you know? Or what things I can buy to help speed up the process? We’ve been trying for a few months now and it’s starting to get depressing..x
