New Research – IVF success with Electro Acupuncture
28 September 2011
A randomized placebo-controlled study of 309 women concludes that electro-acupuncture “significantly improved the clinical outcome of ET (embryo transfer).”
IVF (in vitro fertilization) live birth rates jumped from 21.2 percent for women who did not use acupuncture to a 42 percent success rate for women who received acupuncture twice.
The women received acupuncture 24 hours before the IVF procedure and 30 minutes after IVF. In another control group, women who only received acupuncture once, 30 minutes after IVF, had an increased success rate of 37.3 percent.

Clinical Observation of 54 Cases of Male Infertility Treated by Acupuncture & Moxibustion
Clinical Data
Of the 54 cases, 49 were Chinese and 5 were foreigners, the youngest was aged 28 and the oldest 42. The duration of the problem for 26 cases was between 2-6 years and for 18 cases between 7-12 years. All cases were outpatients and had laboratory examination. Azoospermia was confirmed by aspiration biopsy.
Therapeutic Method
Any medication was stopped one week prior to acupuncture treatment. The same points were selected for all cases whether due to abnormal semen, impotence, failure of ejaculation, azoospermia etc:
After the needles were inserted, moxabustion was applied for 30 minutes.
10 treatments constituted one course.
Criteria For Therapeutic Effect
Cure – the patient’s wife became pregnant after 3 courses of treatment.
Effective – after 3 courses of treatment, the quantity of sperm increased several hundred –fold, previously dead sperm were now alive and their motility was improved – especially the straight movement at medium or high speed, although the patient’s wife failed to become pregnant.
Ineffective – after 1-3 courses of treatment, no change took place in the semen and the patient’s wife failed to become pregnant.

Recurrent Miscarriage – Acupuncture & Chinese Herbs CASE STORY

After 15-20 miscarriages they stopped counting them, especially the many times they had a positive test at home but started to bleed before getting a blood test.
They had both been tested, repeatedly. They had no hormone deficiencies, no anti body issues. His sperm tests were always excellent. Her tubes were clear.
They had many assisted reproduction techniques from the simple to the complex – AIH, IVF, IVF with ICSI, IVF and blastocyst transfer. Their egg yield was good, the embryos were great and often they were pregnant but always they miscarried. At 40 they decided to deal with their heart break and move on – this dream had dominated 20 years already.
Then they were urged to come and meet us.
I took their whole health history looked at tongues and felt the pulse. Chinese medicine diagnosis often depends on appearance of tongue and pulse -especially when the history is unclear. In this case the tongue pulse and story all agreed – there was not much wrong. I had nothing to base my diagnosis on so I asked if they would complete a BBT chart and return in a month to discuss options. In China the reproductive Medicine Units always do this – it is easy for patients to do and it reveals how the body is coordinating the whole reproduction cycle.
Months later a battered BBT chart was delivered to the clinic. This chart showed a woman whose temperature was not registering on the chart after ovulation – Clearly she was producing eggs and ovulating but after that her reproductive process was slowing to a minimum. This could explain why she could conceive but not maintain a pregnancy.
Simply put: she has all the necessary fuel but after 15 days of her monthly cycle her reproductive engine stops processing it.
She liked the simplicity of this but was not sure she could dare to hope again.
She went away and a few (more) months later, having done more similar charts she agreed to discuss treatment. By now she was well over 41 and returned to working full time.
I prescribed Chinese herbal medicines which she took at home and recommended she came in for 2 acupuncture sessions per cycle.
Each month her BBT changed. Her chart showed 3-4 more days of increased activity each cycle. In 4th month she had produced a full healthy chart. After 6 months she had maintained healthy charts for 3 months.
She was then 42. There would not be many high quality eggs in her. So they had to dare to try again.
She is now 6 months pregnant. All scans indicate a healthy baby.
She continues to take Chinese herbs to support the pregnancy.

Tongue
![images[1]](http://www.acumedascot.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/images1-150x150.jpg)
We ask to look at your tongue to inspect the shape, cracks, coating & colour. What we see combined with its location on the tongue gives diagnostic information about you and your condition.
Pulse

We take your pulse on both wrists using three fingers at a time. Each of the areas on your wrist correspond to a major organ in your body. Feeling your pulse at each of these points helps us to understand how the corresponding organs are functioning. Your pulse has certain properties that we look for such as speed, strength and rhythm.
Observing/Palpation
We will look at your general complexion, body shape, nails, hair & skin. We will examine any areas of pain.
Once we have gathered all information a treatment plan will be designed and discussed with you.
Treatment may consist of Chinese herbal medicine, Acupuncture, Bodywork or all three.
Acupuncture Treatment
Acupuncture points are located all over the body. Specific acupuncture points will be chosen for you. Acupuncture needles are fine and painless. A mild tingling sensation, an aching or a feeling of heaviness will be felt during the treatment. Needles will be left in place for up to 20 mins.Read more about Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs & Bodywork in our services page.

Chinese Herbs for Endometriosis may have comparable benefits with conventional drug treatment

Chinese Herbs for Endometriosis may have comparable benefits with fewer side effects than conventional drug treatment
Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) may relieve symptoms in the treatment of endometriosis, according to a study published today. A systematic review by researchers at the University of Southampton found some evidence that women had comparable benefits following laparoscopic surgery and suffered fewer adverse effects if they were given Chinese herbs compared with conventional drug treatments.
Endometriosis is a gynaecological disorder affecting as many as one in six women of reproductive age. It can cause pelvis pain, irregular and painful periods, and infertility. Surgical treatments do not always lead to long-term improvement in symptoms and drug treatments can have unpleasant side effects such as hot flushes, acne and weight gain.

The researchers conducted the first English language systematic review of CHM for treatment of endometriosis. Two trials, which focused on a total of 158 women, were included in the review. In one trial, CHM provided symptomatic relief comparable to that provided by the hormonal drug gestrinone, but with fewer side effects. In the other trail, CHM was more effective than the hormonal drug danazol, and also resulted in fewer side effects.
“These findings suggest that Chinese herbs may be just as effective as certain conventional drug treatments for women suffering from endometriosis, but at present we don’t have enough evidence to generalize the results,” says lead researcher Andrew Flower of the Complementary Medicine Research Unit at the University of Southampton.
The research was conducted in partnership with the Cochrane Centre of Beijing, China and published by the Cochrane Library.
