Muscle tension & headache in long distance cyclist
A healthy male presented with tightness and stifffness in the upperback, shoulders and neck. This was often aggravated after his tri-weekly bike rides.
His neck tension often developed into a headache starting at the back of the head and building up over the scalp to the front of the head. Pain killers would reduce the pain slightly. Twice weekly physiotherapy for a month had not changed the pattern of his headaches nor reduced his muscle tension.
He came to the clinic late one day with severe tension & headache.
We massaged and mobilised his upper back, neck and shoulders then used sliding cupping & acupuncture to activate the circulation over the shoulders via the back of the neck, up into the head.
He fell into a deep sleep during the treatment and was quite disoreinted when we woke him. As he left he reported feeling a great lightness over his shoulders.
14 days later at follow up, he reported no further problems in his muscles -even after a particularly long bike ride.
He returned a month later with a similar headache threatening. We repeated a similar treatment and this time after waking him we showed him a stretch to release the build up which may occur in his neck after long rides.
6 months have passed. He occasionaly passes in the street and lets us know he is occasionally using the stretch and still feeling great.
